The Star SR-20J Type C sliding head CNC lathe represents the very pinnacle of Swiss-type turning technology. A category of machine that has long been regarded as the gold standard for producing small, intricate, high-precision components at volume.
The machine now forms part of our expanding CNC fleet, bringing with it a range of technical capabilities that directly address complex geometries and demanding specifications.
Among its headline specifications, the Star SR-20J Type C offers up to 30 cutting tools, including 14 power-driven tools capable of cross drilling, milling, slotting, and angular hole machining. This level of tooling versatility is particularly significant where components and specialist fixings frequently require multi-axis operations. A manufacturing operation that is capable to execute, in a single setup.
Modern fastener manufacturing is far from a one-material discipline. Whilst carbon steel and stainless steel remain the workhorses of the industry (accounting for many standard hexagon bolts, set screws, and nuts). The broader precision turned parts market increasingly demands components in aluminium alloys, titanium, brass, copper alloys, engineering plastics, and specialist high-performance materials such as Inconel and Hastelloy.
Each of these materials presents its own machining characteristics. Titanium, for example, is notorious for its poor thermal conductivity and tendency to work-harden, making it highly challenging to machine to tight tolerances. The robustness and versatility of the Star SR-20J Type C make it well-suited to navigate these challenges. One of the more technically interesting features of the Star SR-20J Type C is its unique slanted dovetail slideway structure. An engineering refinement that distinguishes it from a number of competitor machines in the same class.
Slideway design has a direct bearing on two of the most commercially critical metrics in precision component manufacturing, dimensional accuracy and cutting tool life. Slideways that are poorly engineered or that deteriorate over time introduce geometric errors into the cutting process. Leading to components that drift outside of tolerance and require costly rework or rejection. Similarly, excessive vibration or instability in the slideway system accelerates wear on cutting tools. A significant ongoing cost consideration for any high-volume manufacturer.
The slanted dovetail configuration employed in the SR-20J Type C addresses both concerns simultaneously. The geometry of a dovetail slideway provides inherent resistance to lifting forces, whilst the angled faces of the dovetail, lock the carriage against movement in multiple directions. By combining this with a slanted orientation, the design further optimises the distribution of cutting forces, reducing the micro-vibrations that compromise surface finish and dimensional repeatability.
Components machined on this platform achieve consistently tighter tolerances, with superior surface finishes. Extended tool life reduces both downtime and consumable costs, a combination that translates directly into more competitive pricing and faster turnaround.
