Stainless steel remains one of the most widely specified materials for fixings exposed to moisture, chemicals or extreme temperature variation, and its story is a proudly British one. Developed in Sheffield in 1913 by metallurgist Harry Brearley, who was investigating erosion-resistant alloys for gun barrels when he discovered that adding chromium to steel dramatically improved its resistance to rust and staining. That discovery, born from British industrial research, went on to transform manufacturing worldwide and remains central to fastener production well over a century later.
The UK’s contribution to fastener engineering runs deeper still. In the mid-nineteenth century, engineer Sir Joseph Whitworth identified a serious problem plaguing the British industry. There was no standardisation of screw threads, meaning nuts and bolts made by one manufacturer often would not fit those made by another. In 1841, Whitworth proposed a unified thread angle and pitch system, which became known as the British Standard Whitworth thread. It was the world’s first national screw thread standard and laid the groundwork for interchangeable manufacturing, a principle that underpins every fastener produced today.
Modern ISO thread forms owe a considerable debt to Whitworth’s original thinking, and his legacy is a reminder that many of the fundamentals of global fastener engineering originated right here in Britain.
