High-Density Polyethylene, more commonly known as HDPE, occupies a genuinely unique niche within the fasteners and fixings sector. Where stainless steel and alloy fixings rely on surface passivation or coatings to resist corrosion, HDPE sidesteps the issue entirely. It is a thermoplastic, meaning it has no grain structure to corrode, no galvanic reaction to worry about, and an extraordinarily high resistance to chemical attack.

Most solvents, acids and alkalis simply have no effect on it, making HDPE set screws a natural choice for applications where metal fixings would degrade, seize, or contaminate a process.

Resilience and Performance

Combined with this chemical resilience is an impressive physical toughness. HDPE has a high impact resistance, performing well in environments subject to vibration, knocks or fluctuating loads, and it carries an estimated service lifespan in excess of 150 years when used correctly.

For specifiers working on long-life infrastructure projects, from ductwork to tank linings, that kind of longevity translates directly into reduced maintenance cycles and lower whole-life costs.

Responsible Roots

HDPE requires comparatively little energy to produce relative to many engineering materials, and is 100% recyclable, fitting neatly alongside the fastener industry’s wider push towards more environmentally responsible sourcing and specification.

It is a material with genuine British roots. Polyethylene was discovered, largely by accident, in 1933 by chemists Eric Fawcett and Reginald Gibson while experimenting with ethylene gas under high pressure at ICI’s works in Northwich, Cheshire. What began as an unplanned laboratory curiosity went on to become one of the most widely used polymers in the world. Its first serious commercial application came only a few years later, when the material was used to insulate radar cables during the Second World War, a contribution that is often credited with giving Britain a critical technological edge during the Battle of Britain.

From wartime application to today’s precision-engineered fixings, it is a striking example of British materials science with a direct line to modern industry.

Rapid Manufacturing

Our M42 x 80 HDPE Flat Point Set Screws are manufactured to a consistent specification, offering a reliable, non-conductive, non-corroding alternative for applications where metal is not appropriate. The flat point profile allows for secure positional holding without marking or damaging the mating surface, making these fixings well suited to applications requiring adjustment or repeated tightening without surface degradation.

As demand grows across sectors including water utilities, chemical processing, renewables and marine engineering. Here at Rapid Industrial Fasteners, we meet the requirements of modern engineering and manufacturing projects across the UK.
